The Mountain Golf Story
Three generations. Three courses. One family tradition that's become a movement.
Course #1 — Red Cedar Point
In the 1920s, Dr. and Mrs. H. P. Linner built a summer home roughly 15 miles west of Minneapolis — quite a distance in those days. They lived next to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mayhew.
Mayhew, on a trip to Scotland in the mid-1930s, saw the game played out in the Scottish countryside. Upon return, in 1938, together they designed and built eighteen holes of Mountain Golf on their Red Cedar Point on Lake Minnewashta.
The first champion was Dr. Paul W. Linner. He was 16 at the time.
Course #2 — Sylvan Lake
In 1962, Paul and Carolyn Linner built a cabin 130 miles north on Rocky Point on Sylvan Lake. It was rough and wild. Over the years, they cleared and seeded the land.
In 1985, they designed and built the second Mountain Golf course. Each year they hold tournaments on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
In the mid-eighties they started a Fathers Weekend — bringing the kids to the cabin and giving the moms the weekend off. The weekend included a Mountain Golf dad's tournament.
Course #3 — The Yellowstone Club
In 2022, the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana agreed to add Mountain Golf to their outdoor activities. The course was designed in the fall of 2022 and opened in the summer of 2023.
